Monk: I roll to investigate for a healing potion. [8 investigation]
Me, the DM: You sure find some potions
Monk: Red ones?Me: There sure are some red ones. Many kinds.
Monk: Just a regular healing potion bottle then?
Me: Not all healing potions come in the same flask! This isn’t Legend of Zelda!
Monk: Okay I just take one then.
Me, knowing where this is going: …….. give me an intelligence check.
Monk: [17 INT]
Me, pointedly looking him in the eye: Given the fact that this is the private hoard of the Grand Sultan you can guess that this isn’t some standard healing potion.
Monk: Cool I drink it.
Me: SO I NEED TO BORROW SOME DICE BECAUSE Y'ALL REMEMBER THAT ALCHEMIST’S FIRE I MENTIONED EARLIER???
He lived, for those in the comments worrying I killed this dumbass over it.
This had been an ongoing thing too. That 17 INT check wasn’t to identify it. It was a roll to see if his conscience kicked in and it was his absolute last chance for me to hint it was a bad idea. He had plenty of warning.
pills n potions
fixed some of the banding?? I think?????? anyway here’s something
Caught in a rather good romance
It sounds like I’m playing a video game and someone is trying to sell me potions. :D
…that is exactly what it sounds like
Hello, everyone! Apologies for the interruption of service and any potential inconvenience. This is what is going on:
Basically, due to a mixture of [complicated legal reasons] and an unsatisfactory (to our internal standards) code audit, we need to take the site down and basically write it all again from the ground up. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that this is something we were already planning on doing anyway, which means we have already made decent progress into it, we’re just deciding to rip the band-aid off now. We’re going to try and get it out as fast as possible, although it may mean some auxiliary features such as creating new group chats or character profiles may be nonfunctional for a bit - I’d like to get the site back online ASAP even if some existing features need to be given time to be rewritten rather than trying to get it up to parity with the immediate site state if that would make it take much longer. Believe me, I want to RP as much as you guys do.
Additionally, we’ll be taking this time while we’re rewriting things to shore up on the technical debt that’s been slowly accumulating as a result of assumptions made in the original code base - this will require us to additionally rewrite our database from the ground up but will not impact your data, everything you have will be ported over.
What will this mean for you, the end user?
-The new site will most likely not look very different - I’m personally kind of attached to Cherp’s appearance - but the code both front end and back end will be rewritten from the ground up. Ideally, this will allow us to build a sleeker, faster, and more responsive site with better load times and speedier blacklist handling.
-Bug squishing. Revisiting our fundamental assumptions about the site’s structure will hopefully allow us to get rid of some pervasive bugs and feel-bad elements, such as the inability to end a group chat without ending it for everyone. We’d really like to squish that one.
-No more update downtimes… after this one. Consider this the last “downtime for update” downtime that will eat all of our future downtimes. We will be building the new site code with technology in mind that will allow us to upload new builds to the site that roll out with zero interruption of service - it just sort of happens on your next page load, like Discord’s browser updates.
-An update downtime right now. Unfortunately, we do not have an ETA for when the site upgrade will be finished, since, as mentioned, we basically need to rewrite everything from scratch. That being said, everyone in the dev team is in go mode, and we will be working as hard as possible to get the site back up ASAP, but because of the nature of the work we can’t commit to any particular time that it’ll be all back online. We’ll keep you updated with progress and technical updates when we can.
-Your data will not be lost. We still have it! We’re porting it to the new database.
Thank you, and our sincerest apologies for the interruption of service and inconvenience.
